Geothermal Team Won 1st Place in Energy Hackathon

Stanford Geothermal team has won the first place in the 2021 Energy Geohackathon, a global competition where teams are challenged to devise the most optimum geothermal field development plan that can satisfy long-term demand with the lowest cost. The team, advised by Prof Roland Horne, was comprised of ERE PhD students Jabs Aljubran and Halldora Gudmundsdottir as well as ERE Master students Sarah Sausan and Luthfan Judawisastra. The competition was held virtually on October 11 – December 18, organized by SPE Europe in collaboration with company sponsors such as Halliburton and Seismos.

During Finals week and Winter break, the students worked together on a geothermal field dataset in the Netherlands to come up with a strategy that can satisfy 180 MW demand over 20 years with the lowest Levelized Cost of Heat. The team deployed data-driven methods to predict energy output, model economics and optimize well placement.
